er individuality. This not only undermines their self-esteem but also perpetuates harmful biases.

The Uniqueness of Black Hair

Approximately 94.9% of Black individuals have curly hair, a texture that is relatively rare globally. This distinctiveness should be celebrated, not marginalized. However, Eurocentric beauty ideals often favor straight hair, leading to pressures that dismiss the natural beauty of Black hair.Heather Ann’s Salon+1lippiehippie.com+1

Bullying Under the Guise of Activism

Criticizing or pressuring Black girls to alter their natural hair isn’t a form of activism; it’s bullying. Such actions strip away their agency and send a damaging message that their natural selves are unacceptable. Nor is criticizing or pressuring Black girls who alter their hair in some way. True activism supports and uplifts, recognizing and honoring individual choices and cultural expressions. Let Black girls express themselves. It is HER hair, not yours.

Autonomy and Agency

Speaking of your hair……

Every individual has, on average, about 100,000 hair follicles on their scalp. So most people ought to be very busy tending to the hair on their bodies.  Tending to the grooming, care, and looking at it for what it has to say to them about their individual overall health.  This personal landscape is theirs to nurture and style as they see fit. Respecting Black girls’ choices regarding their hair is a fundamental acknowledgment of their autonomy and agency.

Moving Beyond Eurocentric Standards

Eurocentric beauty standards often promote assimilation, undermining the rich diversity of hair textures and styles. Embracing natural Black hair challenges these narrow ideals and fosters a culture that values individual uniqueness over conformity. Black girls don’t even ask for anything else from anyone else-not compliments, not flattery, not special acknowledgement-only a modicum of human decency. We water ourselves.

A Call to Respect-Mind your own business and be respectful

Instead of imposing biases, we should focus on our own self-care. Human beings have approximately 5 million hair follicles across their bodies. Ensuring our own hair is clean, healthy, and well-groomed allows us to reflect on the messages we receive about beauty and individuality.medihair.com

By respecting and celebrating the natural beauty of Black girls’ hair, we honor their identity and promote a more inclusive and accepting society.
