At Rosas Children, we often hear the myth that DEI—Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—is “just for Black people” or “just for adults.”
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
DEI, when done right, is about building a world where every child—every single one—has room to grow, thrive, and be seen for who they truly are.
🧩 That includes children who are neurodivergent.
🧠 Children who process the world differently.
🦽 Children with physical disabilities.
🫶🏽 Children who communicate in their own unique ways.
On a previous position as an Independent Living Coordinator, I worked with a young white autistic teen who had just started his very first job. His father—present, loving, and involved—showed up to support him during the transition. Now he was entrusting this part to me. It was my job to support him through the his first job. The anxiety, the expectations, and making sure the retailer was holding up their end. Teamwork.
That family’s strength reminded us:
✨ When systems support difference, families shine.
So who really benefits from DEI?
Yes, Black children benefit.
But also…
White children with disabilities
Children of veterans
Children in rural areas
LGBTQ+ youth (including those who haven’t shared that yet)
Children raised by single parents
Children from immigrant families
Children with religious observances outside the mainstream
Children with learning differences or chronic health needs
Children who feel “different” in ways they can’t always explain
DEI means:
Creating classrooms that accommodate all learning styles
Hiring youth with disabilities and advocating for fair treatment
Offering breaks, tools, and training that support communication and inclusion
Building workplaces that don’t shame or exclude
Teaching our children that differences are not deficits
Let this be a reminder:
If your child needs extra support…
If your child is misunderstood…
If your child has ever been left out…
💛 DEI was made for them, too.
And we will keep showing up—building spaces that say:
You matter. You belong. You’re not invisible here.
Final Word to Parents:
You don’t need to fight alone.
There are advocates in the room. There are policies that were written with your child in mind.
There is power in naming the truth:
“My child matters, too.”
Let’s keep creating spaces where all children—especially those who are often overlooked—are not just included… but embraced, celebrated, and protected.
We see you. We see them. And we’re not backing down.
